Chapter Seventeen

Natalia

When Billy knocked on the front door, I was sitting at the kitchen table with Akshay’s notebook in hand, sipping a mug of wang-flavoured tea and learning more and more details about our client’s betrayal. I let Billy in and we returned to the kitchen.

“What’s up? It sounded urgent when you called,” he said.

I plonked down into the chair I’d been sitting on earlier and Billy tentatively sat across from me. While Theo snored softly in the corner, worn out from his earlier sniffer-dog work (useless as it had turned out to be), I gestured at the notebook resting on the table. “Akshay left his office unlocked. I found this.”

Billy’s eyes widened. “Wait, are you telling me you broke into our client’s house and illegally searched it?”

I shrugged. “Maybe the front door was unlocked. Maybe I thought I saw someone inside and came in to stop them from stealing any more of his toilet paper.”

Billy’s jaw grew tense. “And is that what happened?”

“Good luck proving otherwise.”

He shook his head, leaning back in his chair. His face was written all over with disbelief. “Seriously Nat? This is what you’re getting up to now? You’re usually a good PI. Why are you acting so strangely? This isn’t like you.”

“I came here to see how the person who broke into the house last night might have gotten in. That is a perfectly legitimate reason to be here. I didn’t know Akshay wasn’t going to be home when I arrived.”

Billy nodded. “OK, but when he wasn’t here you should have called him. Asked for permission to come inside. Not just broken in and searched the place without him being present. Our company is in enough trouble for PIs doing dodgy shit as it is. You and I can’t do this kind of thing.”

I exhaled. He did have a point there. I shouldn’t have broken into the house. But if I hadn’t… “You’re right, and I won’t do anything like this again.”

He frowned suspiciously. “But?”

“But I don’t regret it. Look at the notebook. You’ll see what I mean. I think I’ve saved us a lot of time.”

Billy slid the notebook towards himself and opened it up. “What am I looking at?” he asked, scanning the random page he’d opened to.

“Generally with books you’re meant to start at the beginning,” I said.

He narrowed his eyes at me. “I’d prefer the synopsis just this once. What is this? Mysterious music, whispering noises, food going missing?” His frown grew deeper. “Has Akshay been keeping a record of the strange things that have happened in this house?”

“Yep. I guess you could say that.”

“I don’t see why you’re so annoyed. We knew he was into ghosts. He hasn’t made any secret of what he thinks is going on.”

“Billy, that’s a draft of Akshay’s upcoming book on ghostly activities in a house located on the north shore of Sydney.”

“He’s writing a book about this place?”

“Yes, he is.”

Billy chewed his lip. “OK, but I still don’t see what your problem is. Like I said, he hasn’t exactly been secretive about what he thinks is happening here.
